Global SITREP E4-18: Daniel 8

The Vision of Daniel 8
27 December 2018: In watching current events point to and even fulfill Bible prophecy literally in this generation, it suddenly struck home that with the exception of Jeremiah 49:34-39 there are no others that deal with the current and growing greatest problem in the Middle East - the Shi'a apocalyptic regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

So, I asked the Lord, why is it that Iran is so strong in Lebanon, in Syria and even in Iraq; that Iran is the leading threat to Israel and all of the other regional nations, and even to nations that are thousands of miles distant (think: Argentina and Venezuela), and yet there is no distinct prophecy we can look to that gives some hint as to how Iran is reduced to a smaller or secondary role in the prophecy of Ezekiel 38/39?

Within just a few moments later I found myself directed to Daniel 8. This is a purely prophetic chapter that has been read, written about and discussed quite extensively on Eschatology Today. It is a chapter I've always considered to have been fulfilled circa 330 BC in the time of Alexander the Great and the four successor empires led by his generals. I had never so much as considered Daniel 8 as constituting a prophetic duality; a two-fold prophecy, a prophecy where the past is prologue for the future.

I am now seriously considering this as a distinct possibility, if not another imminent prophetic fulfillment. Israel is in the midst of an ever widening kinetic war against Iran in Syria, and against Iran's Hezbollah proxy in Lebanon for the better part of the past four decades. America has been in a hot and cold war with Iran for most of that same four decades, and now it's become a heated economic war (sanctions) that could easily morph into a direct conflict.

Instead of Alexander the Great being the he-goat attacking the ram that is Iran, the modern type would be President Trump as the he-goat going after Iran that is the ram. As this may play out in the near future I would note the subsequent appearance of the coming true Antichrist following in the type example that was Antiochus IV Epiphanes from one of Alexander's successor empires (the Seleucid).

But what is it that piqued my interest in Daniel 8 being a two-fold prophecy; one that sees its ultimate fulfillment in this generation? There are two explicit sets of verses for this. The first is found in Daniel 8:5-7, where the he-goat travels into combat against the ram from a distant land in the west, never touching the ground across the whole surface of the earth. This is a modern military capability only the USA possesses. The second set of verses are Daniel 8:15-17 where the angel Gabriel informs Daniel, "Understand, son of man, that the vision refers to the time of the end." Alexander the Great's conquest of Persia (Iran) was not an 'end time' event; it occurred about 2,350 years ago.

This is just the beginning of a new study on the prophetic duality of Daniel 8; a prophecy that must be fulfilled in this generation.

28 December 2018: Another key set of verses begins at Daniel 8:18 where Gabriel says to Daniel, "Look, I am making known to you what shall happen in the latter time of the [Divine] indignation; for at the appointed time the end shall be." Gabriel then identifies the two symbols, the ram and the he-goat, as the kingdom of Medo-Persia and the kindom of Greece. Once again, and as discussed previously on Eschatology Today, verse 23 is a critical verse because this it evidences a definitive continuity from over 2,300 years to ago to the present time.

How does the West as a whole regard itself? Obviously as the heirs of the ancient Greek and Roman Empires! One look at the great buildings of Washington D.C. and the classical Greek and Roman architecture is seen throughout this globally dominant seat of government. "In the latter time of their kingdom..." is expressly literal! The modern-day versions of the ancient empires are once again deadly enemies in these 'last days.'

29 December 2018: Not wanting to dwell on this much further because the "time of the end" aspect remains unfulfilled. Iran will not quit their push into Syria because Israel hits their bases and depots every couple of months or so. Ditto for Hezbollah. Ditto for HAMAS and the PIJ in Gaza. It will take a superpower and its coalition to suddenly strike and drive Iran out. Hezbollah, HAMAS, the PIJ, plus Islamic State in the Sinai, will be Israel's to deal with in finality. This is what the Lord's prophetic word teaches.

UPDATE 30 December 2018: Not sure if this will be the final update to this last SITREP of the year, but there is an I&W (Indication and Warning) that another Israeli strike may occur shortly in Damascus region. As stated directly above concerning the fact that Iran, short of massive direct military action, will not quit their push into Lebanon and Syria, the news this morning is that Qeshm Fars Air, the false-front IRGC-QF Boeing 747-281F Cargo aircraft (the ONLY aircraft operated by Qeshm Fars Air) departed Tehran and arrived at Damascus International Airport at 10:30 AM IST this morning. US and Israeli intelligence collection aircraft orbited over the eastern Mediterranean Sea, Syria and Lebanon respectively, awaiting the arrival of this IRGC-QF cargo aircraft which is known to have transported Iranian military hardware to Syria and Hezbollah several times since November. The most recent IAF strike in Damascus occurred within minutes of this aircraft departing Damascus back to Tehran the night of December 25th.

Also, in data mining for the above intel, I noticed some social media sites are rife with many recent reports of Russian forces preparing for chemical warfare in the Donbas region of Ukraine.

    1. No credit to me, all glory to God. I sought a prophetic answer to the problematic issue of Iran in the Middle East, and He responded straight away with Daniel 8 as the prophetic solution to the problem. He provided what I earnestly sought.

  2. Wait a minute, Daniel 8 was completely fulfilled by antiochus epiphanies (WITH SOURCASIM). Seriously tho,I'm looking forward to this. For some silly reason I always been entriged by that prophecy. I have always had questions like " Which ones have been fulfilled?" And " Which ones are future?" And Which ones are dual fulfillments?. I'm really looking forward to this

  3. Hartdawg,

Sarcasm or not, one of the things that has been a staple from the beginning concerning the interpretation of Daniel 8 on Eschatology Today is that Antiochus IV Epiphanes was NOT the fulfillment, but only the precursor of the coming Antichrist; the type not the full embodiment. He's not even named in any of the prophecies, whereas in The Revelation of Jesus Christ we've been provided the gematria to use with wisdom provided by the Holy Spirit to correctly identify him by his name.

Now I have known this about Daniel 8 for many, many years -10 years to be precise - that this prophetic duality existed within this text. Wrote about it in a few Eschatology Today posts, such as: Ten Toes (2017), The Little Horn (2016), and The Origin of the Antichrist (2008, updated in 2011, 2014 and twice in 2015). Yet it never dawned upon me that the duality also extended to other parts of the prophecy, such as the duality of the he-goat and of Persia, both 2,350 years past and in the now present.

The only explanation for this that makes sense to me is that God continues to unseal this prophecy in these last days - and I'm praising Him for it! What I'm now becoming aware of is that there is even more to this prophecy, even as directly interpreted by the angel Gabriel, than is currently comprehended.

  4. Continuing to research, I googled search criteria of several variations concerning "Daniel 8." There are a lot of folks on many websites who've written about this, some appear valid, some not so much. So a word of caution in going forward. Do not allow many of these to influence your study, yet acknowledge those that glorify God.

  5. Further digging and I find that a paperback book was published February 2017 in which the duality of Daniel 8 is explored in good detail. I will have a copy sometime next week.

  6. For what it's worth, Sean, Steve Schmutzer has been doing a deep dive study of Daniel at his church Sunday school class and has posted each week's study on the internet (search for The Word With Steve). He was a featured writer at Omega Letter (before it closed) the last couple years or so, and some of his study of Daniel made it into his opinion columns.

  7. Brian,

Yes, I found The Word with Steve archive straight away. He covered Dan. 8 6 months ago.

A review of that material revealed that ONLY the dual aspect of Antiochus IV Epiphanes and the future Antichrist were addressed.

Daniel 8:5-7 are treated as a purely historically fulfilled prophecy which is consistent with the existing conventional exegesis of Daniel 8:5-7.

  8. Sean,
I have been following your blog and comments for 7 or 8 years. I appreciate the work you put into your research. More importantly, the Holy Spirit guiding you.
In relation to Russia's comments regarding sending missiles into Israel if she (Israel) destroys any more Iranian targets, do you think it is possible that Israel will turn to the East and go directly to Iran and put the axe to the root of the problem? Perhaps with the help of the USA? Daniel 8:5-7.

  9. Robert,

In a nutshell, what I think is that Israel will subdue Syria (Isaiah 17 & Jeremiah 49:23-27) and Lebanon (Joshua 13:1-7) as well as the Psalm 83 enemies...

and the USA will lead the existing military coalition (CJTF-OIR) against Iran before the 70th week begins. Iran will be militarily subdued but not completely destroyed (Jeremiah 49:34-39) until...

after a brief period of recovery from war it is Ezekiel 38/39 that suddenly erupts leading to a brief nuclear exchange...

and this heralds in the Antichrist and the covenant among many he will confirm.

  10. The U.S. Department of State just released this statement to the world:

"The United States fully supports Israel’s right to defend itself against Iranian regional actions that endanger Israeli national security and the safety of the Israeli people. Iranian support of and supply to terrorist groups in Syria and across the region that have the clear intent and capability to strike Israel are unacceptable. The United States fully supports Israel's right to defend itself against the Iranian regime’s aggressive adventurism, and we will continue to ensure that Israel has the military capacity to do so decisively. The commitment of the Trump Administration and the American people to ensuring Israel’s security is both enduring and unshakable."

  11. Sean - interesting study. Mark Davidson wrote a book a number of years ago called the four sign posts, where he outlines a belief that Daniel 7 an 8 will be fulfilled in the form of Iraq as the first beast becoming a democracy, Iran being the second beast and ram in which Mark has been pushing for years that Iran will push north, west south etc and cause devastation; the two horns of the ram being the IRGC and Iranian leadership...etc. Anyway - a very interesting perspective which seems to be playing out as we speak (albeit slowly). Mark uses Chiastics to note Daniel 8s dual prophetic structure - a big book but worth the $, and he notes what you have pointed out Sean - that these things are sealed up UNTIL the end...AE was not the end, so all relevant for day. Books are 'Chronicles of the end times' (chiastic structure of Daniel, Matt 23-25, Zechariah and some of Revelation, 'Daniel revisited' and 'Irans great invasion'. I don't hold to all he believes, but really interesting insight to say the least, particularly the Chiastics discussions.

  12. Yes, modern day Iran has already pushed west through Iraq and Syria to Lebanon, and south into Yemen, as well as north into Kurdistan (the KRG) region just last year.

Now I've also looked at the traits that President Trump has which might lend themselves to being symbolized as a he-goat. Sure enough, there are a few.

  13. I found some things to ponder here. Daniel 8:19: “And he said, “Look, I am making known to you what shall happen in the latter time of the indignation; for at the appointed time the end shall be.” (NKJV)

While reading this Bible verse, the following words stood out to me: “in the latter time of the indignation”. In the other Bible translation-version (which Sean quoted) it is even more “visible”, that’s what caught my attention in the first place : “in the latter time of the [Divine] indignation”.

I checked Young’s Literal Translation, which also says, “in the latter end of the indignation”

In my native language it is translated as “at the end of the wrath”.

The AMP Bible version says: “He said, “Behold, I am going to let you know what will happen during the final time of the indignation and wrath [of God upon the ungodly], for it concerns the appointed time of the end.”

This made me wonder about the actual timing of this prophetic event which seems to happen in the end times indeed. I’m just wondering if the “in the latter end of the indignation” means *the time of the wrath of God* though these verses just call this period of time exactly that! Right now we still live in *the grace period* not in the time of His wrath. So, I wonder if the description of the time of this prophetic event aka “the latter time of the [Divine] indignation” places this event in the tribulation period -which is really the “official” time of the wrath of God- or at least in the post-rapture time-period! IF it is so… since we see this prophetic event in the making the rapture must me very near! Of course I could be wrong but in case I'm not wrong we’re really on the cusp of the rapture.

  14. Nora,

The [Divine] indignation" was used because it conveys the full meaning. It is Lord's indignation, His wrath that occurs when the Antichrist is present in the 70th Week (i.e. the latter verses of Daniel 8).

The he-goat vs ram contest at the beginning of Daniel 8 takes place prior to the 70th week. This is obvious because the "little horn" has yet to rise up.

  15. I have the view that many, if not most of the statements and prophecies in scripture have multiple historical applications (past, present and future), all of which have proven and will prove to be completely dead-on accurate. This is one of the characteristics that is woven throughout the scripture as authentication that it was dictated, as Chuck Missler was fold of saying, by one Author who exists outside our dimensions of time and space to multiple different scribes over thousands of years, like the colored fibers woven into our paper money in the United States. The late Chuck Missler did many fascinating analyses of scripture along these lines, although I can't recall if he visited this part of the book of Daniel in detail.

Regarding President Trump, it is the view of many including myself that there is a duality of prophecy in Isaiah that also applies to him: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah+44%3A24-45%3A25&version=NIV. If that point of view turns out to be correct, it will be interwoven with the prophecy of Daniel, so that the final great end time harvest of souls coincides with the end time events of nations. It will really be remarkable to watch all of this unfold.

  16. Thanks for the explanation/clarification, Sean! Even so, it seems-more precisely feels "in the prophetic air"- that our departure is very close! :-)

  17. Nora,

As often referenced here, the Bible interprets and defines the Bible. Accordingly, I would be remiss not to cite Daniel 11:36 KJV with respect to "the indignation."

"And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done."

Compare this with how Daniel 11:36 appears in the NKJV, and it should be clear to all that the word 'indignation' is synonymous with 'wrath'. As we know there is a very brief period of time as we know it for the wrath of the Lord to be accomplished. That period of time is often referred to on Eschatology Today in the same terms (in Koine [i.e. Attic and Ionic] Greek) as Jesus referred to it - the Megas Thlipsis.

  18. Moin (and all),

Before we engage again in speculation about who the Antichrist is (I do believe he is alive today), let's endeavor to weigh that speculation against what the Bible has to say about him to see "if the shoe fits."

People have been speculating on who he is for millennia - and no one has gotten it right yet. The one who eventually does get it right will, I think, apply all that is known about him from the Lord's word; he will precisely match ALL of the set criteria, just as all of Bible prophecy is fulfilled in an exactingly precise manner.

The first thing is as John said in his two epistles - the spirit of the antichrist has been in this world since John wrote those letters between the years 85 and 100 AD. And by those defining statements there have been innumerable antichrists to have come and gone; they are even many of them in various places around the world this very day. But none of them are THE Antichrist, THE Beast of Revelation 13.

THE Antichrist will be the ultimate in-the-flesh embodiment of what 'against Christ' and against all of the followers of Christ truly means.

The angel Gabriel prophesied many details about him. One of the key passages is recorded in Daniel 7:23-25. These three verses alone could have an entire exegesis written about them. Instead of writing an exegesis, just study Garbriel's prophetic words thoroughly.

Like Daniel, who was greatly troubled by what Gabriel said, you also could keep this matter in your heart, or, if greatly inspired by the LORD God, publish them for all to see.

Another key Gabriel prophecy about him is found in Daniel 9:27. This verse serves believers at that time well as a sure identifier, but it is of no use to the bride of Christ because we will not be here to witness it.

Many think he will set up the Abomination of Desolation in the Holy Place of the 3rd Temple. He will not, the False Prophet will do this after he has tasked mankind to construst it. Revelation 13:14.

Paul repeated to the Thessalonians (II Thessalonians 2:1-12) what he had told them directly when he visited there previously. I believe the most important point for us to understand are the words which bridge verses 7 and 8: "... He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way, and then the lawless one will be revealed ..." This is proof positive that the bride of Christ is removed from this earth in the Harpazo prior to the revealing of the Antichrist.

So, for us to speculate on who he is, to identify someone by name, is a truly futile endeavor. I myself have done this, but I'll never do it again. As a watchman for CHRIST it is outside of my purview, well above my "paygrade."

  19. Totally agree, Sean. This is futile and wastes our time and spiritual energy in keeping us from addressing the necessary "watching from the wall" for the pertinent prophetical fulfillments yet to come. Plus, there are too many ministries focusing on past, known fulfillments via sensationalism and not carrying on with the unfettered Great Commission.

  20. Right Chuck, and it's settled, no more identification of the Antichrist posts here.

We shall leave that task to the "Tribulation Saints."

  21. Sean, if I may say something. I have studied prophecy for a long time, and I have followed many people over the years, some good, some not so good. People like Hal Lindsey, grant Jeffrey, JD Farag, David Reagan....the main reason why I have continued to follow this blog is because I have found this site to be the ONLY site that doesn't get sensational. Even the very best ones have had a "this is it" tone some more than others. This is the only site that has said "now hold on a minute" when things are not PERFECTLY lined up. Please continue to do so and don't fall into sensationalism (I'm not saying that you are, I'm just exhorting you to continue the way you're doing it), and please don't go the other direction and become dismissive when things ARE lining up (I really don't see you doing that). I'll quit rambling now

  22. hartdawg,

I can absolutely promise two things for as long as Eschatology Today remains an active prophecy site.

    1. There will never be any sensationalizing done here. Sensationalizing is for one purpose IMHO, to increase site visits in the hope of eliciting cash from the visitor via sales of material or donations.

    2. The will never be any request for money here. Eschatology Today will never become a monetized blog site. Everything here has always been and always will be free of any charge.

I concur with your assessment of Daniel 8:5-7. I am watching the current political and world events with great awe.

I don't see either why so many try and make a case for who and where the anti Christ comes.
    2Thess 2:3,4,5 is clear authority.
